Short-range forecasting and warning technological application R&D subject is initiated

Recently, short-range forecasting and warning technological application R&D subject is initiated. This subject is spearheaded by Beijing Institute of Urban Meteorology, and joined by Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Satellite Meteorological Center, and Ocean University of China. This subject is a first systemic R&D program of high spatial and temporal resolution short-range weather forecast key technology on Winter Olympics.

In the coming 4 years, the subject team will conduct research into 0-24 hour high resolution short-range weather forecast under the complex terrain related to meteorological services for this event. The study includes rapid assimilation technology of dense meteorological data, key physical plan of high resolution numerical model, model error correction technology, and so on.

The subject results will be applied on a real-time basis during the testing matches of the Winter Olympics and finally put into operation during the Winter Olympic Games Beijing in 2022. Through the effective combination with other subjects, they will be instrumental in elevating the meteorological support capacity for major national events.

The subject will also cultivate a batch of scientific personnel capable of 0-24 hour prediction key technology and core algorithm R&D. (May. 15)
