CMA and MONRE promote cooperation in the field of meteorological science and technology

On September 10, Ms. Liu Yaming, Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA) met with Mr. Sommad Pholsena, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) of Lao People’s Democratic Republic, and consulted on matters like meteorological monitoring and prediction, meteorological disaster preparedness, and personnel exchanges and training. They also signed the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of meteorological science and technology between CMA and Natural Resources and MONRE. Mr. Yu Rucong, Deputy Administrator of CMA attended the meeting.

Ms. Liu Yaming expressed that China and Laos are friendly neighbors, and in April 2019, the two countries signed the Action Plan for China and Laos to Build a Community of Common Destiny, which proposed that cooperation in hydro-meteorology and water resources management should be reinforced. In recent years, meteorological departments of the two countries maintained close connections, and have carried out pragmatic cooperation in meteorological monitoring and prediction, meteorological disaster preparedness, and personnel exchanges and training. She pointed out that establishing a more close-knitted partnership is the common aspiration of meteorological departments of China and Laos, and hoped that both sides could implement relevant contents of the MOU, deepen meteorological scientific cooperation, and push forward meteorological undertaking in the two countries.

Mr. Sommad Pholsena extended gratitude to CMA for its support to Lao’s meteorological undertaking. He underscored that CMA is a key partner of MONRE and the MOU signed by the two sides bears vital significance. He hoped to learn the advanced experience of China’s meteorological development, strengthen exchanges of visits, elevate Lao’s meteorological prediction, disaster preparedness, and public service capacities through bilateral meteorological scientific cooperation, and join hands to ramp up meteorological operation and service caliber of the two countries.

In the MOU, both sides propose to reinforce cooperation in fields like meteorological disaster prevention, tropical meteorology and agrometeorology, weather forecast and meteorological information exchange, meteorological telecommunication and technical exchange, climate monitoring and prediction as well as climate change research, meteorological observation system and instrumentation, meteorological services, operational organization and management as well as personnel training.

Mr. Sommad Pholsena also visited National Meteorological Center (NMC) and National Meteorological Information Center (NMIC) to learned more about CMA’s meteorological operation and development. (Sep.18)
