Climate Services in China

CMA is the Deputy Director of the National Climate Change Steering Group Office; the national focal point of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in China; Co-chair of the National Climate Committee; host of the National Panel on Climate Change–a think tank for policies on climate change; and the focal point of the China Committee for the Global Climate Observing System.

 

As main responsibility, CMA releases the National Assessment on Climate Change (report), China Climate Change Watch (bulletin) and China GHG Bulletin; strengthens climate change adaptation, in particular the risk management of extreme weather and climate events; strengthens the assessment of impacts of global and regional climate change on the security of food, economic operation, water, ecology, environment, and project construction/operation; engages in climate change monitoring, prediction, impact assessments and informed decisions at national level; organizes the participation of relevant ministries in the IPCC assessment process at national level; provides scientific support to negotiations of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).

Climate services are becoming more and more vital to human being's adaptation to climate variability and climate change. As one of the most affected countries in the world, China has attached great importance to meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation. To play a leading role, the Chinese meteorological departments are making steady efforts to strengthen the capabilities on climate system monitor, research, prediction, information sharing and service delivery. In following with the WMO’s on-going initiative GFCS, CMA is improving the China Framework for Climate Services (CFCS) which puts priorities on risk management on agriculture and water resource, user interface, assessment of meteorological disaster and vulnerability, and climate operational capacity of service-driven.
